What are the best schools for equine medicine?

Brittany Y asked:

Exactly what it says. I’m having trouble finding any specific information about it. Are there any veterinary schools that are well known for their equine veterinary or research programs?

Texas A&M University is one of the best veternarian programs in the nation, and their Equine facilities are top notch.

Texas A&M has a great veterinary medicine program, and you can specialize in equine medicine.
Any university that offers veterinary medicine is a very good school. It is also very difficult to get into. So keep your gpa at 4.0 and do lots of volunteer work. Good Luck!

Auburn has a very well known equine sports medicine center. However, they only accept 5-8 out of state students a year. Please don’t limit yourself to “equine” schools. Every school will be able to teach you equine medicine and if you want to be board certified you’ll be able to do that no matter where you go to school. If there is a vet school in your state look there first regardless of what it’s known for because it’s very hard to get accepted out of state and it’s twice as expensive.

Auburn is one of the best, but don’t forget the Bluegrass State, they have UK and U of L. Both have excellent vet programs, with lots of equine specialties available. There is also a good equine program somewhere in NY State can’t remember off hand which school, but I believe it is upstate. U of Florida has a good program also. You will probably need to look at each schools’ website or send for their program curriculum’s to really get the info you need.

Kansas State is often overlooked but is one of the hardest schools to get into and has an amazing program, I have worked with many vets from there and they are always the best. Iowa State and Colorado are top notch as well. The best way to look into different programs is to visit and call each department and ask questions about work programs, job placement, and company programs/ sponsorships. Try talking to vets that you like and ask where the went and their recommendations. People in industry often know where the best place to get an education.

    Ohio State

I think Findlay in Ohio might have a program as well.

And the others are right about Texas A&M, University of Texas, and Oklahoma… I think Tennessee has one as well.
