Honestly, everyone has a different ‘ideal college’- especially when you’re a rider. It’s best to determine for yourself what the best things are- size-wise, academically, etc. So, I suggest you read:
1.) Careers with Horses (Vicki Hogue-Davies)
2.) Horse Schools (Angelina Almos)
Also, you can read reviews (which may or may not be accurate, FYI) on
Just remember, a school that one person rags on isn’t necessarily bad- it just means it doesn’t live up to their standards. Keeping this in mind, you want to keep things in perspective and not get scammed.

Helpful in general:
collegeboard.com (FREE if you take the SAT, which you should..)
fastweb.com (zillions of scholarships)
I visited Averett, and it wasn’t my favorite.. But they do have nice, honest staff and a very personable atmosphere. It’s a small school so you get ALOT of attention. I have pictures if you want them (although they’re not anything spectacular).
Let your guidance counselor know that you’re interested in schools with an equestrian program. S/he can be a HUGE help in your college search.
If you have any more questions, or just want more info, please feel free to email me anytime.
Good luck!

check out ihsainc.com – list of all the intercollegiate horse show association schools.
Virginia Intermont kicks BUTT and their coach is a hoot – he was a friend of my coach’s. Centenary, Findlay, people say, but I don’t think I would have liked it there, etc.
The ihsa website has nationals results, so you can see which have the most competitive teams, at least.
